ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Susan L. Thompson was born in Washington, DC, and has lived here ever since. She grew up in Arlington, Virginia, and attended Georgetown University, graduating with a degree in art history in 1986. Susan also has a degree in interior design from Marymount University. Before opening her own design business, Susan was employed at Union Hardware and at Urban Country Designs, both in Bethesda, Maryland. Susan believes her clients' homes should reflect their character and taste, polished by the designer's knowledge, talent, and resources. The result of this collaboration is a home both functional and beautiful, and always comfortable. Susan lives in Chevy Chase, DC with her rescued cats and dogs.

ROOM DESCRIPTION

Because of the age and dignity of the rectory at Saint John's, I felt that the kitchen should be pretty and understated, clad in lovely colours and elegant finishes. The kitchen, of course, also needs to function with twenty-first century efficiency. The appliances and fixtures are top of the line and modern, but the materials are reminiscent of an English kitchen in the countryside -- painted cabinets, ceramic tile backsplash, painted floors, marble counters, plaster walls, Bennison and Osborne & Little fabrics. The effect is attractive and warm, but this kitchen is also intelligent and hardworking.

In addition, the kitchen strives to be g reen with FSC certified cabinetry, American Clay walls, and a beautiful, salvaged pine floor.
