ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Michael Hampton opened his own design firm, specializing in residential projects, in 2009 after spending 15 years with prominent designers on both the East and West Coasts. His design aesthetic has been developed over a number of years and is grounded in an appreciation for the great classic rooms of the of the past, refined to reflect a fresh, tailored, and more comfortable approach that is respectful of a home's architecture and the preferences of each client. This year marks his first appearance with the DC Design Show House.

A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Michael moved to Washington in 2004 to accept the position of Senior Designer with Thomas Pheasant, who has long been one of America's most recognized and influential designers. During this time, he served as project leader for many of the firms largest projects, including a 15,000 square foot country estate in Middleburg, Virginia, a new 35,000 square foot residence in Bel Air, California, and an 8,000 square foot shingle style home in Southampton, New York.

Prior to joining Thomas Pheasant, Michael spent 10 years as a senior associate with Steven Volpe Design in San Francisco, where he led the firm's work on a number of large West Coast projects.

In addition to his design work, Michael creates architectural watercolors based on great European and American buildings of the 17th and 18th centuries. His work, which has been featured in several national publications including House Beautiful, is represented by the John Matthew Moore Gallery in McLean, Virginia.

Michael received his degree in interior design and fine arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he also served as an instructor in drawing. He lives in the Cleveland Park area of Washington with his partner and their dogs.
